20_march_2015A letter a day to number 10. No 1,034

Friday 20 March 2015.

Dear Mr Cameron,

New research from the University of Birmingham has revealed that “Political policies including austerity measures have turned Britain into one of the world’s most harmful societies to its own citizens.”

This will, of course, come as no surprise to the millions that live this every day.

Looking at measures such as suicide, road traffic accidents, obesity, poverty and unemployment across 31 Organisations for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, Dr Pemberton, an expert in social harm says, ‘Far from being inevitable events, such social harms are the result of the way we choose to organise our societies. “There is no “natural” rate of death from the cold, road traffic injuries or obesity, nor are there natural rates of poverty, financial insecurity or social isolation.”

This news comes just as you are about to scrap 80,000 documents of ‘red tape’ that provide safety at work. Sure, there must be some real loonies in there, but you specifically named ‘over-zealous rules which dictate how to use a ladder at work’. Have you ever used a ladder? Do you know how to use a ladder. You don’t come out of the womb knowing such things, nor how to reset a simple electricity trip switch which you disrupted a flood rescue mission to get engineers to do for you.

Mike Cherry of the Federation of Small Businesses is delighted at this news but what ordinary workers think I have no idea as no mention is made of any worker or Union consultation taking place. It’s not surprising really as the lives and well being of ordinary people is a matter of sublime indifference to you and you detest the Unions and all the historic work they have done to improve the lot of ordinary people.

Poverty in Britain is rising catastrophically driven by swingeing cuts, a punitive welfare system and, of course, sanctions. Poverty in Britain is not a natural phenomenon, it is a violence inflicted on ordinary people in one of the worlds richest nations.

The national minimum wage is a national insult. Imagine someone not in need being asked by a friend to come and fix his roof for an hour and offering him £6.50 at the end of it. He’d learn a valuable lesson, how to duck next time he decides to insult a mate.

The reason that Britain is one of the world’s most harmful societies to its own citizens is because of you and your government, it’s as simple as that, and it is long overdue you were gone.
