18_may_2015A letter a day to number 10. No 1,089

Monday 18 May 2015.

Dear Mr Cameron,

I would like to congratulate you, I don’t think anyone could have announced the totalitarian state as well as you did in saying, “For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens: as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone. It’s often meant we have stood neutral between different values. And that’s helped foster a narrative of extremism and grievance. This Government will conclusively turn the page on this failed approach.”

That is simply astonishing. It’s goodbye democracy, goodbye freedom and liberty and goodbye self determination. If they aren’t already, the eyes of the world should be firmly on Britain as we are undoubtedly going to be leading the way on the dark path of neoliberalism and the triumphal ascendancy of the corporate totalitarian state.

Michael Gove is now in charge of scrapping the humans rights act and fast tracking a bill of rights and responsibilities, which, after his debacle in Education, should send a chill down the back of anyone with even half a brain in the country. This is the man who in 1998 said  Britain was “wrong to abolish hanging”. I wonder if whatever he comes up with will ultimately be dubbed ‘The Fascist Charter’?

Iain Duncan Smith is back in charge of the DWP, the man responsible for the introduction of forced labour and depriving people of the means of survival, a punishment so harsh that no court in the land would hand out such a sentence under any circumstances. Tragically, as many have demonstrated, people are choosing suicide rather than enforced starvation and homelessness.

However, you have announced that no law abiding citizen can expect to be safe from state intrusion and that allowing people to get on with their own lives is a failed approach that you will not tolerate, thus declaring that you and your government consider yourselves firmly above the law with the right to intrude in our lives as you see fit.

For a government with only a 12 seat majority that is an audacious, indeed an outrageous, start to this parliament that is going to test the mettle of every politician and every citizen. The writing is on the wall, it couldn’t be clearer, but this man is not your feudal subject and I despise such government extremism.
