23_may_2015A letter a day to number 10. No 1,094

Saturday 23 May 2015.

Dear Mr Cameron,

Jacob Rees-Mogg accused anti-austerity protesters in Bristol of being “tainted by lack of acceptance of democracy” and that they were “…telling voters they got it wrong.”

Of course voters got it wrong, George Osborne was asked by Andrew Marr where he was going to find an extra unfunded pledge of £8 billion for the NHS 18 times and received no answer apart from that it was part of Osborne’s ‘balanced plan’.

Rupert Murdock’s Sun produced a picture of Cameron as the royal baby in England with the headline “It’s a Tory” whilst in Scotland the same rag had a picture of Nichola Sturgeon wielding a lightsaber under the headline “May the 7th be with you: why it’s time to vote SNP” – “Stur wars – a new hope”.

You launched your campaign with the following, “Some people might say, ‘Don’t make this personal,’ but when it comes to who’s prime minister, the personal is national” and calling the Labour party a “bunch of hypocritical, holier-than-thou, hopeless, sneering socialists.”

Manifestos aren’t legally binding yet are full of pledges and promises and what we were offered was a media circus without the entertainment value and Jacob Rees-Mogg calls this democracy?

I can’t imagine what democracy looks like unless it is the people holding corrupt government (which does everything in its power to protect itself from accountability) to account.

It comes to something when even the legal profession is up in arms and has taken to the streets to protect justice and support legal aid and advice services. Is Rees-Mogg going to tell them they do not accept democracy or that they are telling voters they got it wrong? It’s too much to hope that you Tories and rags like the Sun would have anything but sneering contempt for the people or democracy so we’ll just keep fighting.
