29_june_2015A letter a day to number 10. No 1,132

Monday 29 June 2015.

Dear Mr Cameron,

It is one thing for people to suffer in a time of need, say a drought or a famine, but to be made to suffer and die for greed, that is something else entirely.

There is enough money amongst the vultures who will gather for Osborne to sell off state assets so that instead of us being owners of those assets we will be forced to become paying consumers of what were once our assets to private companies who will reap all the rewards and we the losses. Ordnance Survey makes £32 million profit a year for the public purse. The Met Office makes £11 million profit a year for the public purse. The Royal Mint makes £5.7 million profit a year for the public purse. National Air Traffic Services brought in £82 million last year to the national purse. The Land Registry last year, £8.5 million profit for us, £100 million in 2013.

The free market so beloved of Osborne in which ownership and profit are its very reason for being, is not just being denied to the nation, but Osborne is hell bent on asset stripping the nation, passing all our assets and rewards to privateer vultures.

Osborne’s long term economic plan, then, is to reduce us to a nation of paupers paying inflated, for profit prices, for what we once owned.

And what do we get out of it, Mr Cameron, what exactly have we got? Permanent bloody austerity is what we’ve got, announced at your gold plated state banquet attended by the great and the good who reap all the rewards which many of them doubtless stash in tax havens.

I believe it was Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver, who came up with the expression, ‘This is not a recession, this is a robbery’ (which adorned every envelope of my letters for a year or more until I switched to ‘Stop the war on the poor’) and made a film of the same name. How exactly right he was.

You insult us with your meaningless statements about austerity because it IS a robbery and you have made austerity intimate and personal to the lives of millions of ordinary people who are quietly suffering and many dying because of the unscrupulous actions of you and your government.

George Osborne is the heir apparent to the Irish baronetcy of Osborne of Ballentaylor and Ballylemon, so one day he will inherit the title of Baron and go down in infamy as Britain’s foremost robber Baron and won’t he be proud!
