03_november_2015A letter a day to number 10. No 1,248

Tuesday 03 November 2015.

Dear Mr Cameron,

I see Phillip Schofield said to you, “People say that you are out of touch, you don’t know families on the breadline, they are not people that you would deal with.” To which you responded, “I do. I am a constituency MP. People come into my surgery talking about their problems, their circumstances, how we can help.”

Do you explain to them why the deficit is the exclusive responsibility of the poor to pay off while we give handouts to the rich, like raising the Inheritance Tax threshold, lowering the top rate of income tax and giving corporations a further 2% drop in corporation tax? Perhaps you also explain to them how we can afford £50 billion for HS2 so that commuters can get to Birmingham 32 minutes faster than at present, giving them those vital extra minutes to grab a cappuccino or latte from Subway.

Do you explain why Britain’s nuclear deterrent is more important than feeding children, building homes, paying to train more nurses, funding the NHS and protecting our front line services?

Do you take the time to explain why austerity is merely an ideological political choice in one of the richest nations in the world and that each of their households very generously pays £3,500 annually towards the £93 billion given in welfare handouts to big businesses?

Of course you don’t, if you remotely cared about the lives of ordinary people you would have prevented Osborne from attacking Tax Credits and kept your promise to protect them. You would not give with one hand and take with the other, you would ensure that people were genuinely better off. You would actually make work pay and begin to address the appalling inequality in this country.

Your fellow MPs laugh and jeer when told of people suffering hardship and when Debbie Abrahams told Iain Duncan Smith in the house of Commons, “People are dying because of these sanctions,” he responded, “No I don’t agree with that”. That’s how much he cares as he unravels our entire social security system, inflicting more sanctions and harsher penalties than the entire UK Magistrates’ and Sheriff courts.

However you like to spin it, your ‘compassionate Conservatism’ is as corrosive as Sulfuric acid and your policies against the poor are exactly what you mean them to be, toxic.
