21_december_2015A letter a day to number 10. No 1,292

Monday 21 December 2015.

Dear Mr Cameron,

Research by the National Federation of ALMOs and the Association of Retained Council Housing reveals that because of the built in seven week wait for Universal Credit before any payment is made 89% of claimants are in rent arrears.

Your government rejected the Social Security Advisory Committee warning against the wait but you went right ahead claiming, “The fundamental principle behind the waiting days policy is that social security is not designed to provide cover for moving between jobs or brief spells of unemployment.” Enabling a smooth transition from one to job to another seems the most sensible of ideas, but then you Tories are not known for good sense.

A report by the DWP, that got sneaked out with the Christmas dump the other day, found that 78% of those hit by the bedroom tax are penniless by the end of the month and have cut back on food and heating to try and get through. Labour’s shadow work and pensions secretary Owen Smith said, “This damning independent report published by the DWP itself shows how this brutal and unfair policy deliberately drives people deeper and deeper in to poverty.”

The history of the ordinary working people in Britain is really a story of exploitation and contempt by the aristocracy, ruling elites and corporations, rewarding the hard work that built this nation with treachery and oppression, stealing the profits from workers hands for personal enrichment.

Your government have dragged us screaming back to a Victorian dystopia of imposed hardship and punishment for millions and the very worst of it is that you seem to take such pleasure in doing so.

You should count yourselves very fortunate that the ordinary people of Britain are not in open revolt because there is absolutely no excuse and no reason for you to treat us like scum.
