27_december_2015A letter a day to number 10. No 1,298

Sunday 27 December 2015.

Dear Mr Cameron,

In your Christmas speech you said: “It is because they (armed forces) face danger that we have peace. And that is what we mark today as we celebrate the birth of God’s only son, Jesus Christ – the Prince of Peace. As a Christian country, we must remember what his birth represents: peace, mercy, goodwill and, above all, hope.” War makes peace by killing people just as the economic war you are waging against us is killing people, all done to celebrate, and in the name of, Jesus, eh?

We the people have no control over money, we have no say in its production and no say in its distribution other than in re-distributing the bit we get given for the necessities of life that require us to use it for our survival. Money is a forced marriage and it is a brutal relationship for vast numbers of people.

I grew up in a family in which my father (the so called ‘bread winner’) was incarcerated in a mental asylum leaving my mother with four children to raise in poverty. She did it, how I do not know. But she never recovered from that battle, the harm it caused her and us was incalculable. The one thing I can say with pin point accuracy about my mother was that she was a worry warrior. How much that contributed to her death from a heart attack and her battle with drink I don’t have to imagine, what ruined her was her years fighting for her children first and herself, a terrified second, and it never left her. She never escaped the mental prison of poverty that came to define her entire life and her love for us, her children, for whom she lived and breathed and fought for to her dying breath.

You have no way to understand that battle. Your son might have provided you with the means to understand but you didn’t hear. He deserved all the support you accepted from ‘we the people’ in his battle for life, which I would never deny him, but which you now deny us.

I grew up in a conflicted world of the secular and the religious. My secular maternal Grand Father was a secret giver to us, a man who loved his daughter and cared and we responded in loving him for his kindness and gentleness. The other, paternal, side was a secret killer of souls, which I think included my Fathers own life, with their religion which tormented my Mother. Notable exceptions fought against such religiosity and the harm is caused, but all were damaged by it.

I learned my lessons well, those who offered you heaven all too often gave you hell. Those who invoke the name of Jesus all too often do not mean you well. Those who walk the walk, spare the religious talk. Religion is the spin that makes hell on Earth acceptable, it allows the bombs, the violence of poverty, the injustices and the depravity that kills the flesh as if it did not matter. Killing in the name of Jesus is still murder and invoking his name to justify it is obscene, all are damaged by it.
